Instructions for Upgrading PS4 Harddrive

Summary

You’ll basically just be installing a new HDD and then installing the PS4 software and starting from scratch.

Full Sony PS4 Instructions can be found here but I’ve summarized them below (Still use the link I provided since my instructions are only a summary)

  1. Purchase HDD
    1. I recommend this one. It’s a Solid State + Hard Disk Drive Hybrid. The Solid State portion will house the boot loader and has proprietary software built in that will learn where to install it over time. This drive will be faster than a normal HDD.

    2. Make sure it’s the 2.5 inch or Laptop sized hard drive
  2. Backup Data
    1. If you don’t have a PSN Pro account, you’ll need to back up trophies to an external hard drive / flash drive
    2. Otherwise, you can back it up to your account and then retrieve them later
    3. You’ll lose all ‘progress’ related trophies if you don’t back things up so be sure to do that.
  3. Replacing HDD
    1. Remove old HDD
    2. Replace with the new HDD you purchased
  4. Installing Software
    1. You’ll need to go to this link to get the new software you’ll install on the hard drive
      1. https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/#newinstallation
    2. Have a USB Flash Drive ready to download the data to
    3. Basically after you’ve replaced the HDD and downloaded the installation file to a flash drive, you’ll plug it in and then turn on the PS4 and it’ll automatically install it
